There are rare pieces. And then there is the original piece—the one without which Chrome Hearts might never have existed. The guitar strap is that object.
In 1988, Richard Stark walked into a Los Angeles rehearsal studio. Cher was in the middle of a session.
A guy with wild hair, dressed in leather, walked in carrying a guitar strap. It was magnificent: thick black leather adorned with ornate silver details.
Stark wanted $5,000 for it—at the time, the price of an Hermès Birkin bag, or even double that. Cher recalls: "I thought, 'Who is this crazy guy? I’ve never heard of him, and he wants $5,000 for a guitar strap?'" She sent him away. But she couldn't forget him. Shortly after, she called him back.
She placed an order.
And Chrome Hearts was launched.}
